Lockhart's Animal Shelter

The Animal Shelter is located at 547 Old McMahan Road. Turn on Hwy 20 East off Hwy 183 (towards Bastrop), go exactly one mile and turn right on Old McMahan Road. The shelter is 1/2 of a mile on the right. Contact the Shelter @ 376-3336 or shelter2@peoplepc.com

The animal shelter houses about 70 dogs and puppies and 30 cats and kittens daily. An average of 180 animals pass through the shelter monthly. These animals come from the City of Lockhart and Caldwell County. The animal shelter is funded through the budgets of the City and County. Lockhart Cause for Paws supplements that funding as needed.

A stray animal is kept 72 hours from time of admission to the shelter and then is either put up for adoption or euthanized. Approximately 50% of the dogs and puppies and 30% of the cats and kittens are adopted. The new owner must sign an adoption agreement, which outlines the requirements for adoption. These include providing basic care for the animal, obtaining a rabies vaccination as required by law and having the animal spayed or neutered within 30 days of adoption or by the date outlined in the contract. These are requirements set forth by state statute and failure to do so is a Class C Misdemeanor.

The animal shelter also will take in pets that the owner no longer can keep as space permits. There is a $15.00 owner release fee and a $5.00 each release fee on puppies or kittens under 3 months of age.

Animals available for adoption can be found on petfinders.com as well as under the adoptable animal link.
