Saturday: 12 p.m. – 4 p.m.

Sunday and Monday: CLOSED TO THE PUBLIC*

*Lockhart Animal Shelter staffers and volunteers will still be on-site even though the facility is closed to the public. These days will be used for deep cleaning and facility maintenance, along with the day-to-day care for shelter pets; including, but not limited to, feeding, watering, and exercising for dogs. The following services will also remain available even while the shelter is closed to the public:

  • Pet transports
  • Pet reclaims by appointment
  • Working with animal rescue groups for new homes

The Animal Shelter is located at 547 Old McMahan Road. Turn on Hwy 20 East off Hwy 183 (towards Bastrop), go exactly one mile and turn right on Old McMahan Road. The shelter is 1/2 of a mile on the right. Contact the Shelter @ 398-4401 or lockhartanimalservices@lockhart-tx.org

The animal shelter houses about 56 dogs and puppies and 24 cats and kittens daily. An average of 180 animals pass through the shelter monthly. These animals come from the City of Lockhart and Caldwell County. The animal shelter is funded through the budgets of the City of Lockhart, Caldwell County, and various donations.

A stray animal is kept 72 hours from time of admission to the shelter and then is either put up for adoption or euthanized. Approximately 50% of the dogs and puppies and 30% of the cats and kittens are adopted. The new owner must sign an adoption agreement, which outlines the requirements for adoption. These include providing basic care for the animal, obtaining a rabies vaccination as required by law and having the animal spayed or neutered within 30 days of adoption or by the date outlined in the contract. These are requirements set forth by state statute and failure to do so is a Class C Misdemeanor.

The animal shelter also will take in pets that the owner no longer can keep as space permits. There is a $15.00 owner release fee and a $5.00 each release fee on puppies or kittens under 3 months of age.

Animals available for adoption at the Lockhart Animal Shelter can be found at www.petfinder.com or on the Facebook Page for Lockhart Animal Shelter.
