Hurricane season has officially started. Are you prepared?
06/01/2021

According to the National Weather Service, hurricane season in Texas begins June 1st. Though Lockhart is not located along the Texas coast, our community could still see severe storms, heavy rain, high winds, and flash flooding.

Before that happens, here are some ways to prepare:

  • Create a communication plan with your family.
  • Sign up for your community or county warning system (WarnCentralTexas.org).
  • Know flood risks in your area.
  • Purchase or renew a flood insurance policy. Homeowners’ policies do not cover flooding. It typically takes up to 30 days for a policy to go into effect, so the time to buy is well before a disaster. Get flood coverage under the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).
  • Know your evacuation routes
  • Register for STEAR if you or anyone you know will need some assistance in an emergency event.
  • Keep important documents in a waterproof container; create password-protected digital copies.
  • Protect your property; move valuables to higher levels; declutter drains and gutters.
  • Follow weather alerts

When severe weather is in the forecast, you are also advised to keep an eye on local weather reports. Also, sign up for WarnCentralTexas.org to receive emergency alerts and weather notifications in real time.
