Celebrating the 4th of July often involves fun activities, including spending time with friends and family at barbecues, and, of course, fireworks. However, what you may consider fun could be stressful to your pets.
Here are some ways you can keep your pets safe, according to the Humane Society and the ASPCA:
- Keep your pet away from fireworks. Animals are more sensitive to loud noises, flashing lights, and strong smells.
- If your pet is scared by fireworks, ask your veterinarian for help. Your vet may provide medication or give advice on what can help your pet calm down.
- Keep your pet indoors. Crowds are no fun for pets.
- Safeguard your pet with a collar, ID tag, and microchip. If your pet doesn’t have any of those, now is the time to get them an ID tag and microchipped. That way, if your pet escapes, whoever finds them knows how to find you.
- If you find a lost pet, either take then to the address on their tag or bring them to a local animal shelter or vet to be reunited with their family.

- Keep your pets on their normal diet. We know it’s hard to resist those puppy dog eyes, but some food items can give your pet severe indigestion and diarrhea.
