ERCOT Conservation Appeal: Here are some ways you can help reduce electricity use
07/11/2022

The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) is asking Texans to voluntarily reduce electricity use today, July 11, especially during the peak hours of 2 p.m. – 8 p.m.

ERCOT says the extreme hot weather driving record power demand across Texas which led to the state’s grid operator issuing a Conservation Appeal, asking Texans and Texas businesses to voluntarily conserve electricity during the stated hours. ERCOT also issued a Watch for a projected reserve capacity shortage from 2-8 p.m. At this time, no system-wide outages are expected.

Here are some ways you can help reduce electricity use:

  • Set thermostats to 78 degrees of higher.
  • Use fans to feel four to six degrees cooler.
  • Set pool pumps to run early morning or overnight.
  • Turn off and unplug non-essential lights and appliances.
  • Avoid using large appliances (e.g. ovens, washer/dryer).
  • Businesses are asked to minimize lighting and electrical equipment as much as possible.
