Dove hunting season: Don’t shoot within Lockhart city limits!
08/31/2022

Dove season is upon us! But before you head out to your favorite hunting grounds, especially if they’re located within Lockhart city limits, here are a few things you need to know:

  • You cannot discharge a weapon within Lockhart city limitsAccording to Lockhart City Code, it’s unlawful to shoot firearms within city limits. However, if the hunting grounds is in an area that was annexed after September 1, 1981 (see map below), it’s at least 10 acres in size and at least 150 feet away from a residence or occupied building on another property, you can per state law.
    • Shooting hours are from half an hour before sunrise to sunset.

  • Get a hunting license: No matter where you choose to hunt, you are required to obtain a hunting license by the State of Texas. They are available in 1,700 locations statewide--including Texas Parks and Wildlife offices, Texas State Parks, and sporting goods stores—and online.
    • If your hunting location was annexed by the City of Lockhart before September 1, 1981, you will also need to apply for a permit from the Lockhart Police Department.
