Rabies Alert: September 18, 2025
09/18/2025

On Thursday, September 11, 2025, a deceased skunk was found near the 2400 block of Night Sky Cove. Lockhart Animal Control has reason to believe that the skunk was also in the 400 block of Summerside Avenue and 2400 block of Blue Sky Lane shortly before its time of death. The skunk was immediately collected and submitted for rabies testing. On Wednesday, September 17, 2025, the Department of State Health Services (DSHS) notified Lockhart Animal Control that the skunk tested positive for rabies.

No people or pets are known to have been exposed at this time. If you, your children, or your pets may have come into contact with a skunk, please call us immediately at 512-398-4401 ext.2.

Rabies is a fatal disease but is treatable.

Please take all necessary precautions if you live in the area where the skunk was found.

What can you do:

  • If you notice any animals or pets acting abnormally, immediately contact Animal Control at 512-398-4401. An animal control officer will assess the situation to determine if rabies testing is needed. Examples of abnormal behavior include nocturnal animals being out during the day, lethargy or mobility issues, and unusual aggression.
  • Make sure that your pets are current on their rabies vaccines. If they are not current, vaccinate them as soon as possible! Please follow up with your veterinarian or search for low-cost mobile clinics in our area.
  • Do not feed, interact, or encourage wildlife to remain on your property.
  • Rabies is fatal and anyone who thinks they encountered a rabid animal should follow up with their medical provider or go the emergency room as soon as possible. It also should be reported to Animal Control immediately, to determine whether the animal needs to be tested or quarantined.
  • See something, say something!
